As readers of this report will find, the electrification of GO Transit has a long history. Following the innovative establishment of GO’s commuter rail service in 1967, the electrification was studied seven times, most recently with the Metrolinx GO Electrification Study that was released on January 19, 2011.
All these studies identifies many positive attributes to electrification. However, not one centimetre of electrified commuter rail infrastructure has to date been built. The situation today remains perplexing and frustrating. Despite identifying many positive features, the most recent Metrolinx study recommends what can only be described as a leisurely implementation of electrification on two corridors only.
